Use a voltadrop. Here is one that is for sale on E-bay

Yea, go with the regulator. I don't think you'll find one with an exact 6V output, so you might have to get savy and build a circuit which can be adjusted to give you 6V out. I would suggest this over using the suggested ebay item, because all the ebay item is is a voltage divider using power resistors, which is super inefficient.

try to use a voltage regulator like a 7806.
it has 3 pins, common ground, one input, one output.

i don't know whether radio shack has the 6 volts version but a good electronics shop should.
