Grades are important, but one thing I learned was that sometimes a good grade in a normal class is better than a bad grade in an advanced class. Also, some honors classes in high school aren't recognized by colleges. I took so many honors/AP classes in high school and I didn't get a great grade in some of those honors classes. When the colleges reviewed my applications, they didn't consider the class an honors class, and so it ended up just looking like a bad grade with a normal class. I wasted so much effort on those types of classes... It's a good idea to check to see if colleges will recognize your high school's honors classes so that you don't take unnecessary classes.
Another thing that looks good for colleges is extra curricular activities. Colleges don't just look to grades. They look to see if you engaged in activities outside of school, and if you were consistent with them.
As far as how you pass high school classes? Just do the work and study for the tests... If you're having trouble, get a tutor, or set aside more time for schoolwork/studying.
Good luck!

1. Fulfill all graduation requirements.
2. Do the best you can to get the best grades possible in your academics.
3. Take electives.
4. Do extracurriculars-- sports, clubs, etc. Focus on one or two activities and get really involved. Aim for leadership positions. It's much more impressive to say that you were president of this club and captain of that team than you were just a member in five different activities.
5. Take an essay writing class or workshop so that you'll have a good essay for your college applications.
Good luck!

Study. Pay attention. Don't fall asleep in class. Put homework before other things. Find things you like. Go to tutorials if needed.
