Accept a promotion at your current workplace (the one you've been waiting for for 1yr, after you've been working under the promoted tasks and not getting paid for it)? OR accept a position at a prestigious finiancial firm 45 minutes further away from your home (newly married, young child)?

I'm really stuck- the new position would be great because working for this company is like attending an ivy league school. It'll look FANTASTIC on a resume in the future, and give me all the work experience I need now for professional growth in today's corporate environment.. If I stay where I am, I have a 15 minute commute to/from work, in a stable work environment that promotes growth but doesn't follow through with it.

I believe experience is everything. Just from what you've said, the company that you are eying is an Ivy league experience. And, despite the commute and whatever workload comes your way, you sound excited about this possibility.

How different would life be if you just took the promotion at your current job?

A workplace should nurture your life goals from day one and the moment their goals don't meet yours, I think that would be the best time to move.

My two shiny cents - hope this helps. Good luck.

It all depends how long you have been working at the current workplace. If you just started take the new opportunity. If you have tenure at the current workplace and assuming you worked elsewhere before this one, it would not look good on your resume. One of the first things a prospective employer looks at is job history. Assuming you are 35 years old and worked at four different jobs, the new employer would wonder if you really know what kind of a career you are seeking. And is this new opportunity really what you want to do or just make your resume look good. You may not like the working conditions either.

you answered your own question there hun, in a stable work environment that promotes growth but doesn't follow through with it. what good is a company that says they promotoe growth and you already know being on the inside that that isnt true? I say go with the new opportunity, even if it is a bit farther, it sounds like a much better company to work for. Stable work environment could mean that you have gotten comfortable with it and not necessarily that it is good for you although it seems comforting and everything new can seem frightning. Dont settle for comfortable, seek out whats good for you. And the new company sounds like it.

You have pretty much answered your own question. You have a baby now to think about. The financial firm would be awesome because think about it you can always leave later or move closer at some point. 45 mins is really nothing now days to drive. 15 mins is good but the company is unethical! Not a good example to start showing your child to stay with a company like that!

One thing to ponder:
Do you know WHY the current employer does not follow through? Perhaps it is that they have a budget they HAVE to follow and cannot increase your pay to that rate for another year. If it is part of a corporation, they may have rules they are following that are beyond their control.
If you are comfortable at this job, it is close to home, that will make it close to school for your child, and you should consider which job will be considerate about you needing to take off for childhood illnesses and appointments, later for school, etc. But, if they just hold you off for the sake of saving money, better to leave.
Good luck. Not an easy choice.
