I've got a laptop, and I need to hookup an external monitor as the screen is broken. Anyone know how? Thanks!

There is likely a port on the back of your laptop into which you can plug a monitor, and there is most likely a function key on your keyboard that allows you to switch among which display to use. Just plug the monitor in to the laptop and turn it on, and press the appropriate button on the keyboard to switch to that display.

Hi. If the laptop has a VGA output (sort of a "D" shaped connector with 15 pins) then just connect the monitor to that and power it up

You should have a VGA port on your laptop. Just take the monitor and plug it in. You might have to mess around with the BIOS.
