When my 5 month old is concentrating on something, she tends not to pay attention to anything else. I can call her name, talk to her, and she won't turn her head to me. She knows Im talking because she starts to smile but she won't look. She just stays focused on her toy. I have whispered at her ear when she is not focused on anything and she turns her head, so I know she can hear me. Is this normal?

Yes totally, my kids used to do that all of time. She's thinking, how cool is that? Could have nothing to do with the toy, she's just deep in thought.

Nobody on here can tell you for sure that what she's doing is absolutely normal, but I can picture the way babies that age become very intensely focused on a toy and there's a good chance what she's doing is normal. They sometimes get a little scowly look as they intensely focus on a toy.

Still, though, if what she's doing at all makes you wonder about whether her behavior is normal its something you should talk to her doctor about; because if, by any chance, she's doing something a little more "extreme" in this area it would be better to get professional input sooner rather than later.

Yes she is like my daughter. She knows that I am calling her but just wants to do what she wants to do. She is just showing ealry signs of independence and she also may just be testing you. It is just something babies go through. As long as she is reacting she should be OK/
