It seems to me that a person working in the White House at the very highest level of government should be able to keep that straight no matter how busy he was. Certainly in front of the press. Why are they not being asked to close their clearances and resign?

On the hot seat it is amazing how one can forget even the simplest of details and how even things that are big and blown up are easily forgotten. It's taking the 5th without actually taking the 5th.

They absolutely should be fired. And the "person" who answered this question first clearly has no concept of security or secrecy - except as it pertains to things the American public SHOULD be aware of, like whether or not their President knew there would be no WMDs in Iraq before the invasion.
