last year my bf and i leased an apartment together. unfortunately, things aren't going the way i thought they would and we have split. well...i'm moving out and we have decided that our relationship (if there is one) will eventually work itself out. so that leaves me with the question...what is fair? i furnished the entire by myself. i bought our bed, couch, love seat, television, decorations and so on and so forth. but while i was purchasing all of these things, he was contributing to the house hold in other ways (i.e. picking up slack on the bills). is it fair for me to take all of the stuff (since i did pay for it)? i have already decided to leave the bed and linens...does he deserve everything else, too? i just need a little insight and an outsider's perspective. *serious comments only, please.*

while i was purchasing for the apartment; i was still contributing to the bills. there was never a month that he had to pay everything by his self. when i say that he picked up the slack, i mean that he chipped in an extra $100 maybe $150, to cover what was left of the bills.
i do want to do what's right. but now i'm asking myself, "why did i pay for all of that stuff, anyway?"

If you bought it then it is yours. If you guys lived together then it is only fair that he contribute to the bills. Him picking up the slack on the bills, I would hope that any man in a relationship would at least pick up half. If he was the one leaving do you think he would leave his stuff behind for you??? I doubt it. Dont feel bad for bringing the things that you bought with you when you leave. I am sure that he will find the time and money to go buy himself a sofa or whatever else he may need. Keep your head up and stay strong.

If he was providing money to pay bills and other necessities which enabled you to buy the furniture then it would seem only fair that he should be able to share in the furniture that you have. After all,,without his assistance, you probably wouldn't have been able to have the furniture either. Just try to look at it if it were the other way around. I don't know how much you both contributed financially to the apartment, furniture and bills. If you had been paying the utilities and the rent and he had bought the furniture,,would it be fair for him to say it was all his? To be fair though, I would figure a percentage you contibuted and how much he did and divide the furniture based on that.

Girl, you bought it, it is yours. It's not like you went half and half.
I would hope that you saved the receipts incase you go to court. Not saying it would get that far but you never know. He may claim that he bought the things.
If he has a problem with you taking the stuff I would just tell him that even though he did pick up the slack on the bills, YOU bought the furnishings for the place.

let's face it you guys were like a married couple without the paperwork and now you are going through a divorce without the paperwork, Don't be a total b*tch, ask him if he would like some of the things, if you can't compromise sell everything and split to proceeds. If you feel you should get more than him figure out what he spent on bills and etc. and split the difference.

Maybe you should ask him what it is that he would want to keep incase yalls relationship didnt work out. Now if he wants everything, then hell no. You did purchase everything. There should be some way of both of you keepin things so it would be fair. Afterall, he did help with the bills.

Sounds like you should split it since he made up some of the difference in the beginning. It also sounds like you are both mature enough to sit down and go over things. There might be some things he really wants and some things that you really want.

Take what you need and leave the rest for him. If you don't need all the appliances, etc. leave it for him. The more mutual the split the better in the long run if you two ever want to consider getting back together.

ask him what he thinks is fair and if there is anything he really wants. If you two cant come to a comprimise go to a councelor, or a more extreme measure, attorney.
