How would you react if the Kansas City Royals made the postseason in 2007 either as the American League Central Division Champions or the American League Wild Card Winners?

You can keep this on file, if the KC Royals make the postseason in 2007 I will dye my hair Royal blue and shave it into the KC insignia and change my name whatever their mascot is called. And then I would find out which one of the players sold their soul to the devil.

I don't know what rick is talking about...how can you call the division with 3 of the top 6 teams in the Majors and 3 of the top 5 in the AL the weakest division in baseball...please do explain. As far as the Royals making the postseason, that would be more of a shock than the Tigers winning 7 in a row to make the World Series. So I wouldn't plan on that happening any time soon. And rick needs to rethink his statement.

Really not all that surprised. The AL Central is arguably the weakest division in all of baseball; though the same thing has been said about the NL Central. Here's how I see the division going down this year. I think the Minnesota Twins will be strong contender for a repeat. I think second place and a potential wild card will be fought out between Detroit and Chicago with Cleveland and Kansas City bringing up the rear.

Since we are talking the AL Central; any of the five teams can legitimately make a run at either the title or the wild card. A couple of hot streaks during the season and any of the teams are in it.

However, just a few seasons ago, the Royals had a sizzing April and May and led the Central until almost the All Star Break, then they suffered a mid-summer collapse.

The problem isn't so much the talent. KC has the talent; but they have a very stingy owner in David Glass. Mr. Glass bought the team from Ewing Kauffman's estate and Glass has been running the Royals much like he ran Wal-Mart when he was their President and CEO.

The Royals are probably in the smallest market in major league baseball besides maybe the Twin Cities and Milwaukee. But with Mr. Glass running the team like he ran Wal-Mart, there simply won't be the incentive for either: one, for the players to have the will to win or, two, for the fans to come out and support the team. The Royals draw well below the league average and unless the Royals become contenders, I don't see that changing any.

I would react the same way I would if every other major league city was destroyed by a natural disaster and the only team left was the KC Royals. That is the only way the will get anywhere close to the postseason. They will probably be statistically out of it by August. The team sucks and regardless of what they did in the off season they will continue to suck. Right now this team has a culture of losing that it won't be able to break out of.

I would wonder what amazing scout and or pitching coach managed to find some pitching for them that could actually get them there. They *might* have enough stick to do it if Alex Gordon is as advertised and Sweeney doesn't get injured (yeah right), but pitching they don't have, and you don't build a staff around Meche, so I would be more than just a little shocked.

As to the weakest division in baseball, I'm guessing that someone didn't watch baseball the last two years at all. The Tigers, Whitesox, and Twins are all strong teams that I would actually be shocked if the Royals finished higher than any of these three let alone made the playoffs.

If memory serves me correctly, didn't the Royals decide the AL Central winner last year by sweeping Detroit on the last weekend of the year? In Motown? If that is possible, anything is possible. I would still be extremely shocked. The '07 Royals will not be the '06 Tigers.

I agree with d-town, rick needs to rethink his statement. It must be the "east coast bias" that I hear so much about. Would I be wrong to think rick is from the North East area?

As for the answer to this question, I would be pleasantly surprised if the Royals make it to the post season. I'm from MN so I'm a Twins fan of course, but any time a small market team can get to the playoffs I just have to smile, it would be a great thing!

I'd likely write a letter of sympathy to the families of the players on the other team about the loss of their loved ones because that's about what it would take, the team planes of the other 4 teams to crash or some such thing. KC was once good but that was long ago in a galaxy far, far away. They are TOO CHEAP to get any good players. And a word to the fool who said the AL central has the 3 best teams in baseball. I have a few words for you, Red Sox, Yankees, Cardinals, Mets. Need I continue?

In the AL Central? I would be shocked.

The offseason isn't over yet, but so far I'd give Royals management an F in preparing for 2007 and beyond. I don't have much faith in them making the proper moves before opening day.

Billy Butler and Alex Gordon are perhaps the two best hitters in the organization - will management allow them to wallow in Omaha to begin the season, or will they take the proper initiative to get them on the field in KC?

They badly need to upgrade their starting rotation, to add at least one more guy who can eat innings. Maybe they will resign Redman. God, I hope they don't pay him more than $3 million. They already signed one innings eater this offseason, which was good - except for the fact that they'll be paying him $11 million per year for five years. The Gil Meche signing will go down among the worst in baseball history. But I digress. They need pitching yet they currently have seven MLB capable outfielders: DeJesus, Brown, Maier, Sanders, Gathright, Lubanski, and Costa. Throw in Butler (who can play LF though he's more suited to DH) and Teahen (who might move to a corner OF spot to make room for Gordon) and you've got NINE outfielders. If they don't trade at least two of those guys before opening day, Bud Selig needs to issue a fine or something.

I've got little faith in Royals management - the ONLY way they can avoid another 95 to 100 loss season is to put the team in the hands of the youth! Butler, Gordon, and DeJesus need at bats! Gathright is not ready to be an everyday player. I like what Emil Brown does too, even though he's not young. If Angel Berroa doesn't get his act together, deal him! The Angels are trying to move Manny Aybar and they could use someone to start phasing in for aging Garret Anderson. If Octavio Dotel somehow proves to be worth even a fraction of what the Royals signed him for, deal him to a contender early for a young pitcher who projects as a 4 or 5 starter. The same goes for Jason LaRue - if he gets off to a hot start (somehow) then deal him! For anyone under 25 with a even glimmer of potential! Did you really need a John Buck lite?

Ok, I've got to stop now. I could go on all day. I still can't believe they signed Gil Meche for $55 million. What was your question again? ;)

Being a huge Royals fan myself, and being too young to remember them winning the W.S. in '85, I would go absolutely crazy. It would be party time. Then it would be time to sit back, relax and enjoy the moment before I get pissed off at all the fair weather fans in K.C. that would come out of the woodwork. It would be great to see Kaufmann Stadium sold out, as opposed to the usual 12,000 or so people that normally show up to most games.
