I can't give the proof, and I can't remember the author, but I read a book which is, I believe, fairly recent, which gives a pretty good case of Troy as being Atlantis. He certainly proved to my satisfaction that Atlantis could not have been because of the classical literature beyond the Gibraltar Straits at any rate,
and therefore must have been somewhere in the Mediterranean/Aegean basin. I suggest you try to find the book and read it. I wish I could remember more about it.

I don't know why this is in the philosophy section, but it has my attention regardless. Atlantis was crete. The minoan civilization there was around the same time that atlantis reportledly disappeared, and a volcano blew up at the same time of the disappearence. A large chunk of the island had fallen into the Medditeranean, and the architecture on the island as well as the public works engineering was well ahead of its time (for example, the palace at knossos).

There are several proposed locations, but no definative proof of any of them yet.
