Sit them down and tell them what's happening. That's the best way. A phone call or a text message might help but it is really intimidating for the person you are breaking up with.

get to the point, the faster you do it the better. do it over the phone its easier that way, you dont have to stand there with them . Send them text ; sorry, im breaking up with you, dont call, I wont answer. What ever you do dont reply or answer.

sit down with that person & have the 'usual' conversation that goes something like this:
"we need to talk"
"sure baby, what's going on?"
"Lately I've been having these weird feelings"
"ok"
"I think we should see other people"
"but, I mean"
"shhh, let me finish baby, it's not you, it's me, you are such a great person, & I still want us to be friends"
"wtf?, I gave you everything"
"i know, I'm such a terrible person, will you ever forgive me"
"I loved you, I you meant so much to me"
"ok, great, so it's over, right, thanks, I knew you'd make this easy. . see ya around"
