Our neighbors go to Cancun every year (sometimes 2 times per year), and they always have a great time.

BUT... they are of North African descent (but caucasian) and speak other languages in addition to English. Even though they are US citizens, they would not be looked upon as typical "Americans tourists". I think that might make them "safer".

Cancun IS a tourist town, and any kind of tourist-crime would make the tourists go away, so the police probably keep the tourist-crime to a minimum otherwise they would lose business.

Never stayed in one, but I am familiar with a few of them. I am a travel agent and would love to help you find a good one if you need help..sunsationvacations@yahoo.com. I would suggest the one at Avenue Pok to Pok..it is located on the golf course. It is a short distance to the party center. It also is on the lagoon side of Cancun...only hostel in Cancun near any water. The next I would suggest would be Soberanis on Avenue Coba...It is okay. There is one also on Ave Yaxchilan and Avenue Tulum. All three of these are safe...close to the downtown nightlife. Avenue Tulum is a wonderful place to shop and Avenue Yaxchilan has all the good restaurants and clubs. Margaritas hotel is located on the same street. How many people are going?? The hostel will cost you around $30 per night per person. I can book Margaritas Hotel downtown for $55 - $65 per night for two people. I love Margaritas Hotel....I have stayed there on several occasions. It is right beside of some really good restaurants. There are also some hotels on the Lagoon and others downtown that I can get for about the same as a hostel for two people. You would have more privacy and a pool. Let me know if you want me to check for you. Send me dates...number of people and that sort of thing and I will send you some prices. I don't know anything about any of the other hostels.
