when I say "may I ask who's calling" some smart butts say no you may not. When I ask"may I tell him who's calling" same answer. When I just say"who's calling please" some people say why do you want to know. I am frustrated. Please give me a good phrase to say;o)

When I have to ask who's calling here's how it goes.

may I please speak to...

sure, may I please ask who's calling...

no you can't

I'm sorry sir, I can't transfer you unless I can establish what business you have with the person you wish to speak to.

It's called being the gatekeeper and you can get anything you want that way.

"Who can I tell him is calling" is how I used to do it. Implies that you're not patching the call through without identifying the caller first, and doesn't leave a whole lot of room for answers that are not the person's name.

Why bother searching for a phrase? Just ask the boss how he or she wants you to deal with uncooperative callers, and then let the boss come up with a suggestion.

How about saying, "If you'll give me your name, I will check and see if he or she is available. If not, I will transfer you to his or her voicemail." Maybe that would stop the smart aleck remarks, as usually they do want to talk to the person. Good luck!

i know how you feel. i had that in one of my jobs. you can ask what may i say it's regarding to? and usually people have to say who it is and why they are calling. if they say its private or they will know, just say "may I please get your name".
