I cannot be very specific about this because I don't know what kind of computer you are using. In many cases, you can simply change the boot priority from the BIOS(F1,F5, or F8 when your computer boots up) or you can disable USB booting.

I am sure you can get Instrucations on how to do this from your PC manual.

Good Luck!

If it is a old computer... It is time for some upgrades. I have a friend who experienced the same problem when I brought my E.H. over to his place. The other thing it might be is your security software looking through all the files on your E.H. for viruses. But I don't think that is it because we let the computer do it's thing for about an hour, and it was still maxed at 99% use, and still had not made any progress.

I remember having that problem with my old external hard drive (which I sold). I got a Western Digital’s My Book now which doesn’t give me a problem what so ever. But the OS not loading while the drive was on was a rare occurrence. Try looking for a firm upgrade for that drive, or newer drivers; that might fix your problem.

The rigidity is probable busted, and in case you open it up you will make it worse. The drives are very comfortable and the tiniest volume of airborne dirt and dust will make it unusable perpetually and probable corrupt archives.
