There are too many religions but somethings are common to all of them; I know that. My point is: what is it that makes it a religion?

Religion is different depending on what angle or ideology you hold a Functionalist Sociologist would argue that religion acts as a sort of social glue and unites society with common goals, values and ideas e.g the worship of a god or gods. However, I and the marxists would say that religion was the opium of the masses and a way to control the lower classes with the promise that god will like them if they are good and do not moan about being poor.

Broadly defined, religion is a system of communally held beliefs and practices that are oriented toward some sacred, supernatural realm.
A primary function of religion is to bond people together in society. What distinguishes it from other collective worldviews, that may serve the same function, is that religion has that sacred supernatural realm.

What kind of imbecile are you? 'The broadly definition' What the Hell* does that mean?! So you want to know the concepts and aims of hundreds of different religions? well they may share a common ground somewhere but they are all a little different.
If you say religion backwards it reads - noigiler, it is also an anagram of - reign oil! go figure.

Religion is only a label to tag someone with. At times a dangerous one.
An example:
A man walking down a street in Belfast. Someone comes behind him puts a gun to his head and asks" Are you a Catholic or Protestant?" The man has to think quickly, so he says, I'm a Jew.
The guy with the gun replies,"I must be the luckiest Arab in Belfast."

Religion is a term applied to certain beliefs in the supernatural (usually), and most often organized around rituals in some way. Religion's purported function is to offer rules and guidelines about living.

"Religion" derives from a word meaning "to bind up". My definition of "religion" is man's attempt to define God and relate to Him in a way that best suits himself. Atheism is therefore a sort of religion where one says "there is no god, so I am my own god." Religion is an effort to restrict a limitless God to limits with which we are comfortable. Usually it's like a cafeteria plan...take some of this, some of that, ooh - don't like that - no way. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge believer in God, His absolute moral authority, His outrageous patience and love towards us. But you asked about religion. Religion tries to restrict God to beliefs and practices we find understandable and practicable.

Ooph. That's a pisser of a question innit? lol. Well, I guess for me which religion you follow is what you believe happened before you. It's like history but some things weren't confirmed, so theories were developed and then come religion.

The word comes from the Latin religio, meaning I bind up again, or I tie again.
Personally, spirituality is a better approach as it doesn't tie you down unless that's your party trick.
