Where can I get GOOD online writing courses, directing me toward a career in fiction writing?

Many colleges and universities offer online extension or adult continuing education courses. In California (don't know where you're located) for example UC Berkeley offers writing courses both in classes and online. Any big college/university will have a similar program.

A well-known program is the Gotham Writers Workshop, mentioned by someone else. You can find out more about that here: http://www.writingclasses.com/

Another possibility is Media Bistro's eclasses: http://www.mediabistro.com/courses/default.asp?floc=15&fsdi=False&fcrm=False&page=1&plen=100

Whether the classes are good depends on your expectations, the instructor, and your classmates. I have found writing classes (outside of graduate school) to be pretty hit-and-miss. But what you almost always gain is being exposed to books and stories you may not have read before, and you usually end up learning how to better critique good/bad writing.

Good luck.

I'm sorry I'm not going to of much help to you. I don't really know many online courses in writing fiction. However; I have read a number of books on writing. One of the best was by Stephen King called "On Writing". Basically he goes through his whole career discussing each book he wrote starting with idea and shows you how he moved forward towards completion.

I'm not sure about courses, but you might want to create an account at Edit Red (http://www.editred.com), an online writing community. You can upload your writing and have other people comment on it, and you can also comment on others' work. It's really fun!

There's a school called Gotham, I'm not sure of the whole name but just type Gotham into a search engine and you'll find it. It offers oodles of classes, seminars, and workshops for creative writers and a lot of them are online.
