The garden is small and north facing. We just moved in and there are a lot more trains than I expected...

One of the cheapest ways would be to plant some bamboo .
On the inside use heavy drapes on the rooms that are closest to the sound..

Put some trelis work up and some sort of climbing plant to block the sight, double glazing will block the sound indoors, outdoors you can't do a lot about. I lived very near a small airport when I was growing up, and people always commented on it when they came to visit it, but I never really noticed. My parents have now moved and live under the flight path to Heathrow, it really doesn't bother them, so you will get used to it, and chances are your children (if any) will never even notice!

That is a shame, we sort of had an experience like that once..... first night in our water bed in the new house and it started jiggling - jiggled for the next 9 years everytime a train passed - and the tracks were 1/2 mile away!!
BTW we love the sound of the train - no trains in Barbados, and we miss them.
I suggest building a latice or arbour and planting a fast growing vine - preferably an ever green vine.
Then, create a water feature with a water fall or fountain that will make a lovely water sound to help distract from the train sounds, near your outdoor sitting area.

Thuja plicata... This is a thick conifer which will block the veiw and absorb the sound. This is used by councils and in some cases around airports to block off sound and light.. the thuja will grow quite big, but is not all that fast growning. Therefore you will need to buy big in the first place! they can cost about £100 - £200 for a plant about 6ft, you can pay more though for instant cover.

Leylandia hedge. But keep control of the height otherwise you end up with 30 foot trees. For the house, triple glazing.

Plant a row of Leylandi conifers, they grow very tall. Double glaze the windows, but I guess in a few weeks time you will be so used to the noise, you won't hear it. Let us know

Sprinkle a hand full of leaves or some frost from your freezer about half a mile up and down the track the whole network will grind to a halt.

Congratulations. This is ONE situation where Cypress Leylandii will work wonders.

This much-reviled tree is excellent at blocking sound.
