The following could be used:

1. Use a magnet - It is not genuine if the item is pulled towards magnet
2. Try rubbing it with a jewelry cleaning cloth. If it is fake, the plating will come right off after several rubs.
3. Real gold has usually a marked at the clasp portion of the jewelry.
4 Use a silver cleaning solution. If it is not real, then this will oxidize the jewelry leaving it dull.
