How can I test an un-hallmarked metal to see if it is silver without damaging it?

I have french penknife from a vineyard which i think is silver and around 50-60 years old. I want to know if it has any value

Test it with a magnet. If the 'silver' item is attracted to the magnet then it is NOT silver.
