One of my daycare kids is sooooo tiny- she is under height and weight, 7 months old - and now she is walking which really looks weird! She is completely healthy and sees her doctor regularIy and has a sister who is normal size. I have seen so many babies in my day, raised my own kids, and I've never seen anything like it. Could this be primordial dwarfism?

Primordial dwarfism, which is rare, cannot be diagnosed until they are 4 years old. I just can't get over her being so small- it's like she is advancing normally in regards to motor skills, but not growing at all.

I'm not sure why she is so small but my family swears I started walking at 7 months so that part is possible.

I don't know anything about Primordial Dwarfism, however my daughter who is very tall but skinny (and underweight or so the doctor says) was walking at 9 months. I think maybe when a child is thinner it's just easier to carry their weight. My son on the other hand is 6+ months old and is in the 90th percentile in height and weight (he's actually 2 pounds lighter than my 2 year old daughter!) and he isn't even crawling yet! All children are different and I'm sure if their were something wrong with this child (especially something so serious and prominent) her doctor would have seen the signs.

My neighbor had a daughter who was small for her age, and she walked at 9 months. My cousin, on the other hand, has a son who is 17 months but wears size 3T clothes - he didn't walk until 16 months. I think a lot of it has to do with being able to bear their own weight. My cousin's kid was just so tall that he weighed more than his little legs could carry.
Also, I think dwarfism is usually diagnosed at birth, because the babies are so noticeably small. I doubt that a child could be 7 months and not have been diagnosed with dwarfism yet.

She obviously missed that memo telling her that she has to wait longer before she starts walking. Maybe she got the memo but couldn't read it?
It may look weird, but normal is a relative term. Each baby is different, as well as what is normal to them. There is no need to worry one way or another. The baby just wanted to walk! Without having diagnosed the child, I can't say whether or not she has dwarfism. Statistically speaking, she probably does not. But that is a condition which doesn't matter one way or another with walking age, right?
Just keep an eye on the little one. She will want to get into everything she sees. But I think you already knew that!

Mmm, It is a little early if she walks at that age.
The real problem is her height and weight.
1. What does she eat?
2. How are the other spheres of her development going on? (Fine motor skills, sociability with the other kids, etc)
3. Has she had recently an infection?
4. Then, a pediatrician can start to make some tests...

I have never heard of a 7month old walk either but since all babies develop differently, who knows. Since the baby is already underweight, it is important to get more nutrition in her since walking takes up so much energy. I would think the Dr. would have already found dwarfism in her if this was the case. You have a kind heart to take care of kids. I applaud you for your energy and patience. Have a heart to heart talk with the parents about her nutrition and see what you can do to help this precious baby along in life.

On the contrary, she's building up a strong metabolism. Especially with you breastfeeding. If you were feeding her crap-food all day, then that would be different. But every good nutritionist will tell you - for a good metabolism, eat several, healthy, small meals a day. I was like that too. I'm 30 now and still eat like that! I can eat all day! I'm 5'3" 105 lbs (after having 2 children!).

I have seen a 7 month old walking before. He was normal size though. It can be normal for some to walk that early.

I have a neice that walked at 6 mos. alot of people in town couldn't believe it and had to come up and see her. She is regular height and weight. She was cute as a button walking at that age. Her landlord said she looked like a little pork chop walking. If she is dwarf, I would think her doctor would have told her mother.
