Am I allowed to answer such a question as a white man. Oh well, I don't really care. I think there is a blight in the black communities. There are too many people who make excuses and too much of the community is focused on the wrong things. There should be focus on education, getting wisdom and information and seeing a place for your self in the future. But there is not, I see the black community praising rap music, which does not encourage people to better them selves, it praises pro basketball, and gives false hopes and dreams to thousands that they might make it, so disregard school. The community also looks down on black people who make it for them self in what they consider "the white mans world" A black man who succeeds is considered an uncle Tom. There is a great deal that is wrong, I think that people need to be able to take an honest look at them selves and start working to fix the problem, or it will keep getting worse. I live in Savannah Georgia and the average education level is 10th grade. This is not the way that black people will find equality in America.
If I am a racist for seeing problems in the community, then so be it. But it needs to be fixed. Sorry I did not really answer your question. Just some thoughts.

May I suggest you contact one of the local radio or TV stations and talk to the station manager. She / He might be interested in you doing a ten or 15 minute slot each week or being part of one of the local chat programs. During the week you do some research, contact the city council / police / schools / churches / community organizations in your area, they will all be concerned about this. Don't just go and talk, take notes on what they say, and especially ask them for simple (and cheap) ideas on how to improve the situation. Make sure they are aware you will be talking about your appointment on the radio. Start with the less important people and work your way up.
It is important to allow the city council / police / whoever, the opportunity to respond to any criticisms, they are all trying their very best to help the community on very limited budgets, not hinder it. Make sure you state this on air too!
It is important, despite your belief, for you to approach this as "not just a Black problem". Everyone pays! The children suffer, the mums suffer, the dads suffer, the whites, the blacks, the rich, the poor, everyone pays!
Read the letters to the editor in the local papers and cut out each one which relates to your concern. Pick out the best and include it in your talk. Check with the Radio / TV Station to make sure you are allowed to do this on air, but I can't see why a paper would not allow you to mention their name on air, it's free advertising.

Lastly, there is something you have got which no one else has: the courage to do it. You, out of all the people in your city, had the courage to ask this question. It isn't being racist to say "the lack of job opportunities hits the Afro-Americans the hardest" when you have the statistics to back it up.

Addition: Bacchus above has some very good points. When people denigrate success and hard work, what does that encourage but a "lazy looser" mentality. By praising good things such as a good education, that will encourage people to get one.

Well, maybe people abandon their kids because thats what their mothers or fathers did to them. If you never had a mom or dad in your life, when you grow up, you dont know how to be one, you only know what you have experienced. I dont really want to say that its a black epidemic. Yes we all see the talk shows where there are black men trying to deny that they are the father of some girls baby. Maybe though, the men arent always the issue. A lot of women lie to men about them being the father because they want help or dont want to admit they cheated. Really though people in every race do this and its unfair to say its an issue within the black community. If your going to say something that sounds so clearly racist you have to have the stats to back it up so it doesnt sound like you are attacking one race without evidence of your claims. This is a tough issue, in the end it comes down to not wanting to take responsibility for their own actions. We have a problem with that in this country in every race, just look at the abortion rate.

Hmm. Not sure that it is a larger amount of black men than white men, honestly. I think that we might see more black men being exposed for leaving their children maybe because of the exposure of low income working minorities. By no means am I saying that black men are always low income, I'm just saying what is shown on the news. But I happen to know quite a few white men who have also abandoned their children. It's very unfortunate.

Why are you asking this type of question on here? Why do so many people blow many things that African Americans do out of proportion? If they see black people get loud in a store, it turns into black people beating up someone in a store, one black man shoot someone, it turns into one black man killed 40 people. I know why this is, but it's just a shame that it is still in 2007. Many different ethnic groups leave children. It's been happening since there were people on the planet. And as far as being BS, you are the one with the BS because to make such an accusation without actually KNOWING, it a bunch of BS to me. This is not an epedemic in the black community no more than any other community. When GUNS where dumped and sold into the African American community all of a sudden black people had a problem with gun. And black people turned into notorious killers.
Then I see you wanting EVERYBODY to agree with you with your statement," because we all know it is an epedemic in the black community." First of all, WE ALL DON"T KNOW, and secondly I didn't meet my father until I was 35 and didn't hate him a day in my life. I didn't even know the man. When I did meet him we h ad fun.
I grew up with 5 sisters and 3 brothers and just a mom. I have been many many places in this world, and seen many many things. I have two beautiful daughters and I'm now helping my woman raise her young one. So don't give me that **** about fathers or mothers leaving their children is negative because it's not. What's negative is this screwed up society. Teaching lies and deceaving children from day one. I remember the black race being a community and not this individual entity like it has turned out to be. Black people are powerful in numbers, and this is whay black people need to wake up and realize. When a child is there, and has no parents, raise the child and shut the f*** up and stop complaining. Perhaps that child you take under your wing when it grows up and remember you, and take you in. And if it doesn't remember you, then that's fine too because if you are any type of human being you'll have held on to universal family values, and not monitary values.

This is one of the few times I'll use the cultural differences and effects of slavery crutch. I think that with so many children born during the slave era who either had fathers stolen away, or were born without both parents around, it became an acceptable thing for a kid to be born out of wedlock or without a father figure.

But we are CENTURIES past the slavery era and it's beyond time for both parents to take control of their sexual activity, and if they are going to have unprotected sex, to be prepared to raise kids. Bill Cosby and Chris Rock are both very stong believers in this, and both have been criticized by blacks for their blunt observations on this epidemic.

It's not an epidemic in only the black community, it's an epidemic for humans, and that's not BS. If you have proof in ways of studies that shows that black men abandon and don't take care of their off spring more then any other race, I'd be more then happy to review it, as well as the source it came from.

But the real question should be, Why do MEN abandon their children.

I will leave your q to others to answer, but on the violation point,, can I please ask EVERYONE to complain about Violations when they are not warranted.?
A lot of people have been deleted recently after working very hard to get up to a level where they can ask and answer unlimited.

If you get violated for something that is NOT even close to being offensive, please report it with the email header "harassment by another user" and state that you do not deserve this violation. Say that it is harassment and you want the matter investigated and the REPORTERS account suspended.

I will be reporting EVERY one from now on

Lets stop the mindless yobs destroying our work

Just one point though. If you deserve the Violation - take it on the chin !

A lot of poor white men abandon their kids too. It's actually a throwback to the mammilian instinct.

A man's goal in the mammal world is to impregrant as many females as possible to propagate the speices.

It's a natural urge. Now in our society, men abandon their kids because kids these days cost a lot of money. Which poor people don't have a lot of.

Kids can take up half your pay check, which could have been spent on xbox or alcholol or a nice new car.

I do believe it is more so in the black community. Woman of other races are also affected, mostly white and hispanic who are left only to obtain government asisstance for their bi-racial children. But the subject is hardly ever confronted by African Americans, they make a bigger deal out of some obnoxious white comedian who says the "N" word. This is just another dilemma the blacks consider a "family" problem. What gains were made by the Million Man marches?
