I really hate spending more money than necessary. I don't like spending money on the tiny little bottles of rinse aid for my dishwasher. Vinegar works to get streaks off of glass, so why wouldn't it work for my dishes?

No, it won't hurt a thing.
i have even heard that every once in a while you should run it through a cycle with just vinegar ( no dishes ) to clean your dishwasher.

I've been using vinegar for years without any problems.

it will not harm it. I run a empty load of vinegar at least once a month. keeps it clean and deoterized.
