1) We went to the moon 7 (?) times between 1969 and 1972.
2) It's expensive to go to the Moon.
3) It's dangerous to the astronauts - one solar flare would kill them by radiation poisening.
4) It grew boring to the public after the 5th or so time, and NASA redirected it's efforts elsewhere - to shuttles and space stations.
5) We are planning to go back, but we need to rebuild the necessary equipment, and that takes time and money.

We still don't know how to do it cheaply enough. I mean look at how much the space shuttle costs just to go to low Earth orbit. It definitely costs more to go all the way to the Moon, and especially to land on the Moon, than it does to go to low Earth orbit. And nobody wants to pay the high cost.

We went to the moon to beat the Russians. When the Soviet Union fell apart, we lost interest in the moon.
