Why and when does copper attract rice and vanishes when kept on a mirror by melting the mercury of the mirror?

the cotton does burn when it is rubbed on the copper. attracts rice and when the rice has fallen by itself the rice turns to dust. why does these things happen to some copper things and when?

gebobs not quite right, pink unicorns dont cast shadows, only blue ones that cast a green shadow after sunset.

It has to do with the shadow cast by the pink unicorn to the left of the candy trombone.
