Depends what your looking for. Fender and Gibson are the two big names and more professionals use. If you are looking for some thing to learn from go with a PRS or a Vintage these are not that expensive and they sound great. If you can't make up your go with a Fender but ask for ones made in the states the mexican made ones are not that good quality.

Electric, some acoustic:
Fender
Gibson
Ibanez
Carvin
Schecter
Jackson
ESP
Yamaha
Epiphone (they're not very good, though)
Charvel
Peavey
Acoustic:
Martin
Taylor
DO NOT write Les Paul - the fools who said so don't know it's not a BRAND, it's a MODEL originally designed by Gibson.

Gibson and fender are the biggest. Some others are Yamaha, Jackson, and Epiphone.
Good luck with the project.
