It is more a sign of changing hormone levels that anything. Pregnancy effects every organ of the body--even the skin. Some will have beautiful skin (when normally it is not), some will have blotches. Some will have oily skin and other will have dry skin. It all goes back to the hormone thing. I had this with all4 of my pregnancies to varying degrees. Here's what helped me. 1) drink lots of water 2) pat dry after bathing 3) use a good lotion or the Palmer's itchy skin spray to moisturize while you are still damp(after patting dry) 4) switch to a laundry detergent without scent or color and give up the fabric softener. 5) DON"T SCRATCH-- it only makes it worse and gives you sores to deal with.

It is very possible! My stomach itched almost my entire pregnancy and My stomach looks like I was attacked by a wild animal. My mom carried twins to full term and never got a single stretch mark (I don't think that is fair LOL). My advice would be to either get a cream especially for stretch marks or a really good hydrating lotion (or both) and rub on your belly everyday after your shower. Good Luck, there ugly but you'll have a beautiful baby to show for it.

It's not uncommon to feel itchy, particularly around your growing belly and breasts as your skin stretches to accommodate them. Hormonal changes may also be partly to blame.
Some pregnant women find that their palms and the soles of their feet get red and sometimes itchy. This common condition may be caused by an increase in estrogen. It usually disappears right after delivery.
You may also find that things that normally make you itchy — dry skin, eczema, food allergies — make you even itchier when you're pregnant. Finally, there are certain conditions that occur during pregnancy that may cause you to feel itchy (see below).
How can I get relief from the itching?
Avoid hot showers and baths, which can dry out your skin and make the itching worse. Use mild soap and be sure to rinse it off well and towel off lightly. Then slather on an unscented moisturizer — some scents can cause irritation.
Try an occasional warm oatmeal bath. (You can buy oatmeal bath preparations in drugstores.) Wear loose cotton clothing and avoid going out in the heat of the day, since heat can intensify the itching.

Itchiness just means the skin is dry and is getting stretched tight across your uterus. I have had itchy skin since about 6 months, and no stretch marks so far. Make sure to use a good moisturizing lotion - it will help with the itch and can also help to prevent stretch marks.

Lather on Palmers cocoa butter lotion, there is a specific one that reduces and prevents stretch marks for pregnant women, you can find it at walmart... I'm only 6 weeks along and I'm starting early to give my skin more elasticity and moisture so I can grow healthily... Cocoa butter soothes your dry skin and leaves it feeling much better... it will help with stretch marks and it tones your skin as well... Overall it's a great pick.
Good luck, hope you try it!

Cocoa butter is used for both preventing stretch marks and treating them. If the weight gain is due to pregnancy, the cocoa butter should be rubbed daily on the affected area. Cocoa butter should be applied to the skin soon after a warm water bath, when the pores are open and the cocoa butter is easily absorbed. Shea butter may also be used instead of cocoa butter. one thing that worked for me was palmers cocoa butter formula for dry itchy skin. its in oil and it helped me out. also, i recommend using cocoa butter which is also from palmers. you can find it in the motherhood store. I didnt get one stretch mark and i gained 50 lbs. when you get itchy, jus rub the oil or butter on. I did it a bunch of times during the day, and before i went to bed. they say its the belly expanding thats why it itches. but using these products helped so much that i only got a few stretch marks after i gave birth. I still use them to this day.

It is not a sign of stretch marks but of dry skin, but scratching the skin is what causes stretch marks, i was under the impression with my last pregnancy that since i didnt have any stretch marks i was one of the lucky ones so i was not adamant about applying lotion (even though my mother told me to!) , stretch marks appear AFTER you have the baby, when the skin starts going back down, so keep your skin as moist as possible, not only will it help with the itch but it will help prevent stretch marks from surprising you later on

Not necessarily. The skin could be dried out, pregnancy sucks out a lot of nutrients from the body. The skin also could be expanding. Depending on weight gain and skin elasticity is the weighing factor when stretch marks appear.

I am 8 months and my stomach has started itching too. Stretching and dry skin are to blame. Use a good lotion.
