x/4 + x/6 = 1

12(x/4) + 12(x/6) = 12(1)

3x + 2x = 12

5x = 12

5x/5 = 12/5

x = 12/5

x = 2 2/5

x = 2 hours 24 minutes

Add their speeds which are reverse of the time taken for a job. So, in this case, if both of them work together on one job, it will take: 1/4 + 1/6 = 10/24 and the reverse of that will give the time. 24/10 hours is 2 hrs. 24 minutes. So, first answer is correct.

painting a house can be imagined to be like covering a certain fixed distance "x".thus speed of Sam is "x/4" and speed of Jay is "x/6".when both would do their speeds will add to "5x/12".thus the time taken will be equal to "x/5x/12=12/5 or 2 & 2/5 hours.

Sam paints 1/4 of the house in an hour. Jay paints 1/6 of the house in an hour. So together they can do ??? of the house in an hour (add the fractions). This means it takes them ??? time to do the house.

You can do it!

You have to solve (H/4)+(H/6)=1 where H is the number of hours and 1 is the total (complete job). The answer is 2.4.
