in my experience yes,
they are very difficult to wait on as well, very demanding.
also, told by a friend who works at a casino, that the black people rather wait on others than black.

I do my part to break this and also the Christians are poor tippers stereotypes (usually I tip closer to 20%), but judging from the looks of pleasant surprise I get from the waitstaff I deal with it's gonna take a lot more work. Actually, I only get this reaction at "mainstream" restaurants, when I go to the ones I go to most often (generally Asian) it doesn't seem to be the case, probably because so few blacks/christians eat at them.

Because Blacks are "generally" poorer. Plus they "generally" come from low-income areas--and in low income areas, you eat at cheaper restaurants, many of which don't even require tipping. Because of these facts, the Black culture has developed to be less familiar with and less comfortable tipping large amounts of money.
Most people overtip anyway. I think its ridiculous for a waiter to expect a 20% tip as standard--especially at restaurants where all they do is take your order (ie, any restaurant that is not a 4 or 5 star establishment).

Excuses,,excuses........they don't know they are supposed to tip,,,don't know how to figured it out.. they get bad service... blah blah blah. Everybody knows, tipping has been around since restaurants exist,,third graders can multiply by 15% or 20% if service is really good........ I worked for 25 years in 3 stars restaurants. always gave excellent service no matter what color or nationality, black people would spend $100.00 leave nothing or maybe laugh at you by leaving a dollar. Even my African-co workers did not want to wait on them., and they are black too. Because of course we depend on tips, is our salary, and we pay the taxes, whether we get tipped or not.......and they call us racist, is not my fault what happened 100 years ago, people move on and learn to be better and get better. My uncle is married to a black Hispanic woman, who is proud to be called black , I love her to death, she is my best friend, love my cousins,.. I have never heard the Spanish blacks or the real African blacks , ( I know many) about the white man this and the white man that, and they used to be slaves too, Can't be leaving in the past, and find excuses, like my Nigerian friends say must move forward. and show you can be better than people think.

Poor tippers is not a color thing. It depends on the service we get. If you wanna talk about race, Why do whites get better service at any establishment that requires tipping? I went to a resturant called Sonny's BBQ in Warner Robins, Ga. It was a birthday dinner for my brother and I. Well, my mother spent over $60.00 at the place and not once after we got our food did we see our server. No drink refills, extra silverware....nothing. So maybe it isn't the customers, IT MAY BE YOU!!!!!!! I use to serve and I made money everyday from whites, blacks, asian, mexican, etc. So evaluate yourself before you go blaming other people.

I never worked in the restaurant business, maybe its limited to that, but I have seen blacks tip well in other situations. I occasionally go fishing in Mexico with some blacks and they always tipped the deck hands, drivers, helpers ect. I think it may have to do with wealth, if they are doing well financially they tip more. In other cultures some tip more regardless of their financial status.

Funny you say that because I went out with a large group of friends (mostly white) and they took off before the check came and didn't leave money for a tip.
I always tip well just to combat the "blacks don't tip well" stereotype. I tip the valet, the waiter, and the attendant in the bathroom.

Maybe b/c we autommatically get poor service walking in the door b/c the waitstaff assumes from the get go that we arent going to tip.
Here is a little secret, black people tend to OVERTIP b/c of ignorant folks who automatically assume that we arent going to tip. I went out with a guy once who told he purposely over tips at establishments he frequents b/c he doesn't want folks to "assume" that he doesnt tip well based on the color of his skin....
Also there are some folks that just don't know how to tip properly. I have had to school family members on calcualting a tip out the correct way, it wasn;t that they didint want to tip, they just didnt know how to tip.

Please try not to generalize. I've seen people of every race not tip accordingly. I believe it's more of a service thing. If waiters/waitresses are not being polite and showing professionalism like they're supposed to, they arent going to get a good tip, bottom line. Especially in today's society where people are just trying to make money, and employers arent taking the time to hire the right people. I went to a restaurant where the waiter was hitting on me. How tacky is that? Do you really think that I was supposed to give him a good tip? I dont think so.

I was a waitress for a while and yeah, I did notice that. I don't know the reason, but I'm backing up your claim. Nine times out of ten they also left a horrendous mess for me to clean up as well. I'm not racist at all, I have many friends of different races, but there does seem to be a trend there.
