It's absolutely safe. As a matter of fact it's worse for the computers power supply to be turned on and off alot. Think of it like a lightbulb. They only break when you try to turn them on.
Think of this: When does Google shut down their computers? You can always access google right? =)
If that's not enough info, below is the output from my server at home:
skreet@ubuntu:~$ uptime
00:15:11 up 27 days, 16:34, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
Needless to say, the weekend should be okay =)
EDIT: In response to shorty, computer image burn-in hasn't been a problem for over 15 years, you can leave your monitor on without worry, folks!
Good luck!

Should be fine as long as:
You have a good fan / cooling
You disable the auto shut of time
Leave the screen turned off
have active anti virus running to prevent Viruses
other than that the major thing is disable the auto shut of time and leave the screen turned off to avoid "burning" images onto the surface.
the only trouble is will the download install it's self, because you could have a download that will sit at an install screen for the whole weekend.

The longest time I left my computer on was about 12 h. I may have left it more but I don't remember to much situations. I think it's safe to leave it a maximum 20 h., but a hole weekend might overheat it.

at home, we leave our computer on for 2 days then we turn it off, then another 2 days and then off.. we do this regularly. anyways, we have tried 5 days and there was no problem. office computers even last longer than that, sometimes we don't turn them off.
if it's just for the weekend then there's gonna be no problem. just make sure it doesn't overheat (keep it ventilated/cooled) and protect it from surges if power may fluctuate. good luck!

Yes it is fine as long as it will not overheat but the only way it would overheat is if you have modified your computer. Actually even if it does overheat 99.9% of the time the computer is set to turn off by itself at a certain temperature. Unless you turn this feature off.If your computer is made by a name brand company like Dell,Compaq,Gateway ext. then it will be fine

Mine is on 24/7 too. The last time I turned it off was last summer during a storm.

our downstairs computer is a media center pc and it is on all the time. We have not turned it off (except to restart) since we got it, which was about a year ago.
