In almost all cases you would have to be a teacher first, which you need a degree to do. Then you usually are required to take more classes, once you are a teacher, to learn how to be a better leader and to help you understand the legal aspects of being a principal. You need a college degree in Education, either elementary education, or a subject area + plus a certain number of education credit hours. It will help to get some teaching experience after college. Then, you may need to get a master's degree in Education, with a focus on administration.
