Look at each of the possible answers. substitute that numbe rin for x (you can ignore the numerator).
for x=8: 8+8 = 16...does NOT equal zero.
for x = 0: 0+8 = 8...does NOT equal zero
for x = -8: (-8)+8 or 8-8 = 0...see it now?

of course it also depends on how to read the formula. do you mean (x^2-64)/(x+8)? or is -64/x a separate part? I imagine it was the first possibility, but I can't be sure.

A function is discontinuous where the denominator is 0. So...

And A+ for the guy above me for being the only other person on this site that doesn't just give the answer away.

Mmm... actually in regards to order of operations, the answer was not what I originally was thinking. I'm silly, you see. I wear silly hats. Regardless the answer is still there.

d3m419s61: Oh very close... except is a function not continuous when the numerator is 0?

64/0 is undefined. Therefore where x=0

x^2-64/x+8=
(x-8)(x+8)/x+8
the x+8 cancel out and you have x-8
the answer is x=8
