The school where my son goes is ridicullous. They act as if it is a college prep school or a private school. He is 11 in 5th grade and tell me the reason behind the three hours of homework each night is to prepare him for High school. Never mind that he has a mandatory science project due on the 22, a presidential book report due on the 28 and must read 30 minutes each night....the homework still comes. If he misses any assignment he gets detention after the third one. he has detention to serve tomorrow. They give out assignments a week in advance and different due dates for each, the student are expected to copy the assignments from the board and are supposed to be responsible for turning them in on time with no reminders given. I am told this is to prepare them for high school. When did schools start peparing them at such an early age?

If you would like to check out other elementary schools in your neighborhood or community, all you have to do is call the principal and make an appointment to visit and ask your questions. When you call, tell the person to whom you speak about your concerns and the purpose of your visit.

You may also want to check out any charter schools in your neighborhood, however, do so with caution. I have taught at two charter high schools who were new. At one, the motives of the woman for whom I worked were motivated by greed and personal gain. Although her school was closed down by the state, it wasn't before she bought homes and new cars for her family. At the other, the woman who runs the school teaches students to use the "race card" and has no problem belittling her teachers. Needless to say, I don't work for her anymore!

If you do consider a charter school, select one that's well established!! Good luck in your search! Annie

Schools are trying to raise the bar due to more competition to go to college and get a job. Most schools are trying to push their students more than they used to, and it might be going a little to far.

You can probably google " (insert county here) school system" and find a list of the schools in your area.

However, it might just make it even more difficult for your son, as the other schools might be curerently covering material that his current school hasn't started on.

Your best bet would be to remain at the same school, and encourage your son to do his best. Try to help him as much as you can, and he'll be thankful for being challenged at school later in his life.
