Christian zealots and other opponents of gay marriage argue that 'since the purpose of marriage is to produce children, and gays can't reproduce, they shouldn't be allowed to marry'. Fascianating- I have NEVER met any couple who married someone with the sole purpose being to produce offspring. People usually marry becuse they love each other.
I was recently married- my wife and I havn't decided if we'll ever have kids- If we choose not to have offspring, is our marriage less valid than a marriage that does produce offspring?
These same Christian zealots that bash gay marriage argue that the purpose of sex is for procreation alone. Does that mean that my wife and I should be celebate with each other if we choose not to kave kids?
Right wingers are truly warped people..

Agree with you!
Marriage is not just to have more kids on the planet. So what if a couple are gay and married.....I have met gay people who are much better parents then those other people!
Anyhoo I agree with you!

Well I do agree with your point of view. However there is another way to look at it. Gay bashing aside, Christian organisations argue that marriages are for the purpose of producing children. Couldn't it be that they are trying to create a society where children are not born into unwed or single-parent families?
Also the reason where people marry because they love each other is only a sociologically accepted fact. But the reasoning is also proven flawed since there are couples that cheat on each other. On the other hand, there are marriages that remain intact (even with cheating) for the sake of the children.
Therefore, although love is one reason to get married, it's not the only reason. I hope Christian zealots will one day realise that, and understand that it's not their place to judge. Judging others and sentencing punishment based on their own beliefs is 'playing God'

I think people look at it that way is because the government looks at marriage as a certain kind of "guarantee" that our nation will continue to be populated. That's why they give you tax credits for being married and having children. And people are entitled to their beliefs that gay marriage is wrong. When you have a nation that is 98% heterosexual, why do you get mad? This country is based on democracy, not everybody has to get what they want. If the majority of people do not want to allow gays to be married in government ways, then so be it. Gays have churches that they go to that they can get married in, that should be all that matters to a religious person anyway. And if you're going to say something about all the insurance benefits and all that, I believe they are changing that now. You just have to have lived with that person for a certain number of years and then you can collect all the benefits just as if you were married.

It's mostly the Catholic and the Mormon churches that are so heavy on multiplying--not every denomination of Christianity.
Many gay couples do adopt children--or have some from a previous experience--so it is not absurd to think that people who feel married do want children at some point.
I don't believe that in this day and age that anyone thinks marriage and sex are for the sole purpose of procreation.

Have you heard what same-sex marriage advocates are doing in Washington State? They are trying to pass a law that says that opposite sex marriages must have children within three years or their marriage becomes void. Its designed to make the right wingers eat their words about how the purpose of marriage is to produce offspring.

I am a right-winger and I don't think that the sole purpose of sex and marriage is procreation. It is one of the purposes but not the entire purpose, otherwise spouses would be no more than sperm/egg donors.
If you choose not to have children, your marriage is not less valid, but you will be missing out on one of the greatest joys in life!

I am catholic, but I believe that anyone who wants to get married whether it is a gay couple or straight couple should be allowed.

Dude. You know that. I know that. You're wasting your breath on the fundies, however. For example (taken from an actual conversation):
"Why can't you just love your fellow man?"
"GOD! mutter mutter THE BIBLE! grumble grumble LEVITICUS!"
"What?"
"JESUS!"
See? Their belief system is a defense against having to have a belief system.

I think it is amusing that more people get "married" because one is already pregnant than those that get married in order to have children......

They are warped and they will use anything that they even think approximates a 'reason' to push their hate and intolerance...but they rarely think it through.
