I've tried to quit and I just can't find the inner strength. I have tried the gum and lozenges, gross. I feel bad when I am so cranky towards everyone. Any ideas?

I think it's sort of funny that you say that. One of the reasons I have decided to quit is my boyfriend doesn't smoke and I think I have realized how much it sucks and I don't want it to be part of my life anymore.

First of all dont say your quitting because if your trying to quit and you slip up a little then, it makes you feel terrible about yourself and like a quitter. So, as an addiction specialist i would tell you as I tell my clients to say i am stopping smoking instead of quitting. It makes you feel alot better then if you do goof up. There is no excuse. I have had the same problem with chewing tobacco. Every time I tried to quit, everything just went wrong and it left me an excuse to take just one more dip. Also, if you can try not to hang out with friends that do smoke, they play a big influence on our actions. I have a friend that every time i see him it remindes me of taking dips with him and it would make me crave tobacco. So, be carefull around who you hang out with and if you do have good friends, let them know before hand that you are going to stop smoking, and ask them to support your decision. If they are not very supportive then they are not your true friends. I have learned that the hard way. Also, dont let anyone tell you that just one more wont hurt and that you can occasionally do it. That is False. Dont let anyone get into you. You have your own free will, a choice to do it or not.

Quitting smoking is definitely not easy, so don't blame yourself if you haven't yet been able to do it. Often, people have trouble quitting if they are not prepared to do so. Have you chosen a quitting date for yourself? Have you switched to a "lighter" brand of cigarettes? Are you trying to smoke fewer cigarettes?

I would also recommend having a conversation with your doctor. S/he may be able to provide other tips to help you stop smoking. Since the gum and lozenges haven't worked for you, ask about other forms of nicotine replacement, such as the patch or nicotine inhaler or nasal spray (available with prescription only). In terms of the crankiness (which is totally normal!) - let your family and friends know what is going on and I bet they will be understanding and supportive.

There are a number of other tips that you might want to check out - from preparing to quit to what to do the day before you do, the week of, and the week after...not to mention how to stay smoke-free! I hope that this link is helpful: http://heart.health.ivillage.com/smokingcessation/smokingcessation3.cfm

So, pat yourself on the back - you made the decision to quit, and that is the most difficult step. Look inside you, muster that strength, and employ some of the tips mentioned above and in the article. You can do it!

Stop buying cigs,if you don't have the you can't smoke them.It sound easy but I know it's not it is just the first step. You can only take one step at a time, step with care and gently lean on friends when you need to.Try puting the money for smokes into a gym membership when you feel like smoking take a lap instead.

My husband quit cold turkey, but I have no idea how. It was when we first met. I don't smoke, so I think it was the fact that I didn't he didn't want to gross me out. So, I guess you could find a god guy that doesn't smoke (if you don't already have one)
