I was always told that growing up. My dad used to tell me if you tell the truth you can forget about it, otherwise you have to always carry that lie with you.

Yes! Even "little white" lies come back to haunt you. It is much better to answer truthfully, not make up stories, or just keep your mouth shut.
Telling lies to make yourself look good or even gossiping (which consists of rumors and lies) will come back to bite you on the butt.
