I am just wondering as I am reading these questions why the United States seems to be on the bottom of the totem pole with the people who can help make a difference. C'mon Oprah. Brad, Angelina & George. I understand other countries have poverty and disease but so does the United States. Atleast American citizens try to help them selves instead of looking for handouts. Why cant charity begin at home?

Because all this is designed to SELL themselves and their product (movies, print ads, TV spots and get invited to things around the globe -- which means free-travel and USA tax-$$$ saved under this pretext). Angelina and Brad are stars in the USA for their looks -- and we know their backgrounds. So, they re-invent themselves as "people who care" elsewhere because they would be received as 'special' and diplomats more or less, overseas. While there's idoltry here - there are also critics (who recall that Jolie's claim to fame was giving a much-older actor another sort of "service" on the way to the Academy Awards and appeared quite woozy on the red carpet.) You won't catch Brad Pitt doing a question-answer with English-speaking reporters in America.. for the same reason why Peter Sellers in "Being There" didn't. PS - You think Bono wears sunglasses indoors everywhere for any reason other than face-recognition and worldwide album sales? This is self-promotion.

Part of the problem is the neediest in the U.S. generally have access to programs and aid from the U.S. government and charitable organizations. Are all of the needs met? No. However this is not from a lack of financial resources for the programs, it is a deeper issue that cannot be helped with a check and some media attention to the issue. It also must be pointed out that many wealthy celebrities donate to local and domestic charities, however that is not publicized as much. Furthermore, wealthy celebrities in the United States, through paying taxes give much more money to the United States government than the average citizen.

Finally, the money spent on providing economic aid to the needy internationally can make a bigger impact. The poor there are not the same as the poor in the U.S., there are no libraries, access to drinking water, and in many places, a high amount of children are orphaned. In the U.S. although it isn't a glamourous system, through food stamp and reduced/free lunch programs at school nearly every child is guarunteed at least one meal a day.

I think they are already famous in US and want to be famous around the world as well, kinda like a popularity contest. Just like the new trend of adapting kids from outside while there are hundreds of American kids in shelters waiting for adoption.

i think it has something to do with being rich or at least having more money than your peers. it's sort of like being decedent, like buying a gold plated tv. when you have it easy like that you stop seeing that other Americans can't afford insurance, or to be vegetarian, to even feed their kids for that matter.
i think its because they have the luxury of time, the ability to travel and learn about other peoples problems and they get so fixated on them they forget about everyone else. or they're just trying to be trendy and give tot he most popular cause.

A couple of reasons:

1) They have the money to do so
2) It will put their face in the media
3) And some actually do care..e.g. Angelina Jolie

I definitely agree with you, we also have problems, but people look up to U.S so we have to be the leaders and help other countries out before we fix our problems.
