I am surprised at how many people don't know that Lincoln was the GOP's first-ever President. And that the South was mostly comprised of Democrats (to this day) that opposed everything Lincoln stood for, and kept those positions for over 100 years after his assassination. In fact, if RFK and JFK don't begin supporting Martin Luther King in the 60's -- the Democrats might never have gotten ONE vote from Black America. (and come to think about it, Dems haven't done too much since LBJ.. who is the 3rd best Dem President of this century after FDR and Truman).

While many southern Democrats were card-carrying KKK members (a embarassing path to political success right through the 60's) ...I'm looking for real-world reflections by Yahoo's real people, and not MORE of the Dem-Rep. hate-debate and party-line retreading of Cable tv hack-talk shows (repeating what they read, on camera). We know there's a certain separate-but-equal mentality in MOST of our nat'l figures today (Hillary?, Barrack calling himself "Barry" until his public life, Edwards' mansion, JFKerry, Bush Twins' lifestyles as integrated as Paris Hilton's, Biden's commentary, Gore's silver spoon upbringing that's never mentioned, Sharpton's actual existence in the media, Rudy sending his son to suburban NJ for HS, etc. etc.)... Lincoln was a statesman. He was a true leader, and to think that a GWB if President in 1860's wouldn't have fled to Canada, or a Bubba Clinton wouldn't have accepted a pardon for pay somewhere along the way... is silly. Lincoln's on Mt. Rushmore for a reason.

"After defeating the most powerful military in the world to gain our independence not once but TWICE.." I like your zeal in supporting Lincoln's place in history - but Great Britain burned our cities to the GROUND the "2nd time" (White House, Manhattan etc.) - and if they had the energy, land-army, allies or revenue easily could have taken America as a colony again.

Lincoln was well Hated during His administration. He sat for days in Congress to ensure that the 13th Amendment was passed. He made IT happen. Democrats tried to make the 13 amendment law and Under Democrat Buchanan but it was a law to make slavery legal. Lincolns version made it illegal! Kennedy Voted Against the Civil rights movement until he was president. The KKK was funded By Southern Democrats Known as the DixieCrats (Pelosi's dad was a dixiecrat). Blacks voting for Dems is the Biggest Joke ever played on former Slaves. They still need to keep them down after all these years.

It is real trying to see bettydad still out of work and still trying to rewrite History the GOP is the same as in the day of Lincoln it is the Democrratic party that has moved. Even Ron Reagan was a Democrat until it became the NEW Communist party.

Lincoln had a Vision in Office that made the Abolishment of Slavery the goal. Yes in the beginning it was to save the Union. After that wa accomplished He sat IN congress everyday Until the 13th amendment passed He signed it then and there.

Well, I am surprised how many people don't know the actual dates of Lincoln and Washington's birthdays; now that they combined the two , that information is getting slowly lost so change isn't always good; I think that we got in this mess by I am republican; I am democrat and not I am an American citizen. Lincoln is the essence of America, where someone from little means could end up being the President of the United States; that is taking it back to basics, somewhere where we need to go now; political parties and money corrupt; at the end of the day, the party shouldn't matter , the work ethic, improvements and changes do ! Happy Birthday Abe!

Abraham Lincoln was without a doubt, our nation's greatest president. After defeating the most powerful military in the world to gain our independence not once but TWICE, Lincoln knew that the only way our great nation would crumble was from within. And it nearly did. Lincoln SAVED our country from itself during the Civil War. There would be no United States of America today had it not been for Abraham Lincoln. So I leave you with words from the great man himself for you ALL to ponder and appreciate.

"All the armies of Europe, Africa and Asia combined could not by force make a track on the Blue Ridge nor take a drink from the Ohio River, not in a trial of a thousand years. If destruction be our lot, then we ourselves must be its author, and its finisher. It cannot come from abroad. As a nation of free men, we must live forever -- or die by suicide."

Reagan become the in trouble-free words solid one..I hate the way they have equipped Lincoln as a lot as be someome who cared about slavery even as that wasn't very intense on his record. The Civil conflict become initially about unfair taxes, state's rights, and the right of a human beings to regulate themselves...all subject matters the position Lincoln become on the incorrect area.

Interesting interpretation. However, you must remember that at that time, a majority of the Republicans were liberal, the definition of that being change for the better. The same is known about President Roosevelt (Theodore) and Justices Hugo Black and Earl Warren, all three Republican. Now the tides have changed, with a majority of the Republicans being conservative, meaning Scalia and Alito, not Black and Warren.

ABE LINCOLN. my idol!! Think about where he came from .a log cabin, self educated, and survived ridicule, hatred ,and a difficult
marriage to a loving, yet a completely neurotic woman.
The compassion shown to the Confederacy at the end of the Civil War and the quiet dignity with which he lived his life makes
Abe Lincoln my choice for the greatest President thus far.

Lincoln was more interested in preserving the Union than freeing the slaves. If preserving the Union could have meant keeping slavery, then he would have done it. He was not the "abolitioner" of slavery that the history books want you to believe.

Equality was another matter. He did not say they had a right to complete equality with white American citizens. In the September 18, 1858 debate, Lincoln said:

I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races - that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And in as much as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.

Lincoln would have absolutely nothing to do with today's Reublicans.

Abe's Republican party disappeared in 1896.

Southern "Democrats" were actually right-wing Republicans, but couldn't use that name BECAUSE of the association with Lincoln.

It's real tiresome to watch these little conservatives claim Lincoln and civil rights as their legacy. Republicans have been on the wrong side of EVERY progressive idea for over a century.

The idea that the South is primarily Democrat today is laughable. What do you think Nixon's "Southern Stragtegy" was all about. It's working today.

Don't be too impressed with your knowledge. You know less than nothing.

The Republicans sure have fallen a long way. There hasn't been a good Republican president since Eisenhower.
