The other day I went to plug in my headphones on my computer and I accidently put the plug into this other slot and my system shut itself down. I got it back up and running, but now I have no sound coming out of my speakers! The slot that I put the headphone plug into has the numbers 1394 above it and some other sign underneath it that i dont recognize....I have no idea what this plug-in is for....any help would be great!

The fact that your computer shut down due to you putting a headphone/speaker cord into your firewire (1394) port would lead me to believe something shorted your system and possibly the speakers..

I would make sure your speakers still work by plugging them into a portable audio device like a cdplayer or iPod.

Alternatively if you have some headphones you could try plugging them into the place your speakers usually go and see if you can hear anything.

If you don't hear anything (try playing music) with the headphones connected then your soundcard might have shorted out and may need replacement. This is assuming (as previously mentioned) that you have made sure your volume is up and the sound control panel show the audio being on.

Edit--
From what you wrote I assume you originally had speakers connected to your computer, but you wanted to use your headphones. So, you disconnected your speakers and then when putting you headphones in you put it into the wrong place. Now you are saying your speakers (not your headphones) don't work when they are plugged into the correct port. That would mean they stopped working after you disconnected them to use you headphones, which is highly unlikely.

Again do make sure your speakers and headphones work on something other than your computer and then try your headphones again in your computer.

Umm ... a 1394 (firewire) socket will not accept anything but a firewire plug. You must have jammed it in there really good.

Sticking the wrong plug in there wouldn't make your speakers stop working. Check to be sure they are plugged in and turned on.

If the speakers are plugged in and turned on check to see if your computer is recognizing your sound card.

id say check you sound control in the bottom right hand corner and make sure they are not muted.
