I don't listen to rap often, I'm more of a jazz man, myself. However, I can easily say that all rap songs are not all about drugs, crime and degrading women. Of course there is a variety of songs with that message, but that is with all music; it's not meant to be taken seriously, it simply sells more tickets than songs most in this generation would consider "bland".
Tupac made some songs like those that almost all rap is generalized as, but there were several meaningful songs that he did make. Same goes with Nas, Lyfe and more. And furthermore, if you downplay rap as that, you'd have to downplay all rock as psychotic rambling, despite the fact that rock songs don't always convey that exact message (Nickelback's "Saving Me" would be a prime example). Why the generalization?
