It is often used in titles, but exact meaning is not clear. Associate Senior Administrator, Associate Chief Engineer, Associate Specialist, Associate Partner etc. What makes position (duties, reporting, type of hire or other) different compared to one without word associate in it. Thanks!!

An Associate does all of the things the senior doesn't have the time, or the will, to do. He/she can speak for the senior when the senior is unavailable.
