If you want to stay with GM you can go to the 572 Big Block Crate motor sold over the counter by GM. You can go to 1000 HP with this bad boy. You will need to do a lot of fabrication to get the whole thing together, since noting in the S10 drive line is going to handle this kind of power, but since you said that you were building it to race, then fabrication would be necessary anyway.

You can put ANY motor from 4 to 12 cyclinder engines. Just a matter of changing motor mounts, transmission and shaft. and maybe some space modification.
Now I do not know if you are ready for racing if you had to ask the question now. You see you need to look at everything. You need to get some magazines on racing to parts magazine. Whether for the races, streets, or trying to outrace the local cops, you need to read first about the engines and how to hot rod them.
I would guess a 496, bored out.

You can put any engine in it you want. It just depends on the depth of your pockets and the amount of work you want to do. A fairly easy and common swap would be an LT-1 from a Corvette. Get the computer, sensors, wiring harness and transmission from the Corvette with the engine. A friend of mine did this swap, and it runs like a scalded dog. Good luck.

How much money do you have to spend?
The more money the bigger you can go.
Like a 454 installed in a Vega, if you remember those shoe boxes Chevy put out (YUCK!)
If you want to drive it and race it without to much expense I would go with a 4.3L V6, they will top out at over 145 on the Freeway in stock form!

You can put as big of engine in as you want, you just have to put new engine mounts in it and might have to cut out some metal to make room, i would put a chevy 350 in it, then soup it up, or if you don't have that much money to spend, then just soup up your old engine, that should give you some good horsepower

You don't need big you need power, But a Mitsubishi 4G63T engine it it. light weight and can make 600hp! This has been done before and with good success, Check dsmtuners.com there are some articles in the forums about it.
