I was wondering what the rules at most banks are in reguards to writing checks as "Cash". Can anybody cash them, do you need ID or do they have to be cashed at the bank they were written from etc.

Anybody can cash them..
whoever has them in their possession last.. just like dollar bills..

and they can be cashed at any bank..

The bank may ask you for id though.. they'd probably write your drivers license on the check in case it ever came back stolen or anything.

If a check is written to Cash, anyone can cash it. Whether the banks will honor a two party check or not is another story. If you have an account with the bank, the bank will cash it but will put a hold on your account to the extent of the cash until the check clears. The checks are easier to cash at the bank where they are written and identification is usually requested. One should never write checks to cash unless you are already at the bank or at the place where you need to get the money. If you are paying someone for services and you are writing a check to cash, you have no receipt for the service and no proof that you paid the person. Also, if you are having someone cash checks for you and are writing them to cash, then you had better be able to trust them because they can run off with the money and you have no recourse. Guard your checks like they were money. If someone steals a check from you, that person can write it to cash, forge your signature and cause you lots of trouble, and can even steal your identity. It's illegal but since when has that stopped an identity thief?

Most banks require a signature on the back of the check, even though it is made out to cash.
