I feel it's because out in the west women were doing more than having tea parties and kniting circles. In the west women worked in the field and on the farm along with their husbands and fathers. They showed their strength and intelligence by running businesses while the women in the east at the time were still affraid to sweat.

The western states were more progressive simply because the type of people who would move there were more adventurous.

Thus when then had to make laws the women that were there worked to make a state that they would want to live in, including suffrage for women.

Because in the west we gave our women more rights to begin with, and appliances to do the housework with, so they got bored with nothing to do and started organizing with other women and complaining endlessly about their husbands, and that morphed into wanting more privledges.

Fast forward 20 years and we now have modern feminism. Mark my words, nothing will ever be enough for them.
