It's more towards what child watch and learn around him. Media, Newspaper has given so much boost to cricket, that children think it's very necessary sport. You switch over to any sports or news channel, only thing they have to show is 90% cricket, where rest is kept aside.
And turn to sports section of any newspaper, it will be more of cricket then any other sports. I am not blaming over media, newspaper for cricket hype, but parent's, sports communities should encourage more towards other sports, as football, hockey, kabbadi.
Anyways, now children in India are more involved in other sports, most likely football.

India has found success in cricket only at the international level, in recent times. Cricketers are also associated with glamour. TV and sponsorships have popularised cricket with the average Indian to a great extent. Succes as a cricketer is the gateway to a dream life for the Indian youth. So parents send their children to cricket coaching camps only ignoring other disciplines. It is unfortunate indeed as you have rightly observed. Apart from athletic disciplines in Olympics, India fares poorly in hockey and soccer. At one time India was the World and Olympic champion in hockey and an Asian powerhouse in soccer. Today these two games suffer from institutional apathy too. And to think that only a handful of countries in the world have national cricket sides. Till sense dawns on us we shall have to live with the shame.

In cricket money is playing the main part. Popularity is the second. People are behind money and name.
