turn it over to the police, file the paperwork at the bank to have the check reported as fraudulent, and get your money back.

I would first find out why they stole the check. Was it because they needed the money to buy drugs? If so I would report it to the police and have the person arrested. If you don't they will continue to steal either from you or someone else.

If the cause was because they had gotten into a tight money spot and needed to pay for groceries or the rent, then I would talk with them about getting some financial help and if the reasoning was good enough offer to help them through this time of crisis.

In that situation, I would take them to small claims court, then ban them from my house until some sense of trust is restored. I know that I may not get my money back even after the whole court thing, it's the principle of the matter that counts.

They would have 10 days to pay me 2 times the amount of the check. I would then publicly humiliate them in front of the rest of the family. Keep those check books, wallets under lock and key when " " is visiting.

Call the bank and tell them.
They have a fraud department that can help you with all of the details, but I do believe that theydo most of the legwork for you.

You can tell relatives you are going to do this, and to give you money before they are prosecuted.

that's a good question...depends on other circumstances.
How close are you to this relative? Brother? Uncle? Cousin?
Have they done things like this in the past?
Did they confess and apologize?
Are they on drugs?

Depending on these circumstances I would either...
A. See if they needed help and try to get them through bad times
B. Call police and have them put in jail
C. Kick their motherf***ing a**.

You need to report it to the police department at once and talk to the bank. Then you may not have to pay the overdraft fees.

I would give them a chance to pay it back...if they refused I would turn the matter over to police and press charges.
