Let's just cut to the chase. We had 10 million single -mother families in the U.S in 2002.

Gays didn't cause this NATURAL DISASTER !

Thank heterosexual marriages !!

Over the past 30 years, the number of single-parent households has increased dramatically. Single-mother families increased from three million in 1970 to ten million in 2000, while the number of single-father families grew from 393,000 to two million (U.S. Bureau of the Census 2000). Single parents are not a homogeneous group; they come from all social classes, all racial and ethnic groups, and all age groups. However, single female-headed households tend to experience more financial burdens than single male-headed households. According to the 2000 Census, one-parent families maintained by women were more likely than those maintained by men to have family incomes below the poverty level (34 percent compared to 16 percent). In addition, of the twelve million one-parent families, the ten million maintained by women were more likely to include more than one child than the two million families maintained by men (46 percent compared to 36 percent).

Single-parent families encounter a number of stressful challenges. Role overload and income inadequacy place single parents at extremely high risk for anxiety, depression, and other health problems. Lack of essential resources and support can also lead to negative parenting behaviors (uncommunicative, unsupportive, and punitive) which result in adverse outcomes for children (Hamner and Turner 2001; Brooks 2001).

The gay marriage fight is really a battle between two groups of religious denominations - Christian and other in both cases. That battle is being missed by the media, and I believe that the battle threatens democracy in America.

One of the reasons for the Revolution, in which ancestors of mine fought -- was to establish freedom of religion in the new nation. Now, we are throwing that away, because contrary to what those on the Right would like you to think, this is not a battle between "people of faith" and "atheists" or some such -- this is a battle between two groups of people of faith, using the government to establish one sides views -- the EXACT THING that the anti-establishmentarian clause of the Constitution is there to prevent.

Of course no one should "make" those whose faiths oppose gay marriage perform such marriages, and no one ever would. So ministers from the Southern Baptists and Assemblies of God and Ultra-Orthodox Jews and Fundamentalist Muslims should never be asked to perform gay marriages, and certainly not forced to.

On the other hand, why should faith groups that support gay marriage -- such as the United Church of Christ, the Unitarian/Universalist Society, the North American Spiritualist Church, Reform Judaism, and the Correllian Tradition of Wicca -- all recognized Churches and 501c3s be barred from practicing their religious faith, which says it is ok to marry same sex couples?

The first group of faith groups is realistically using the government to prevent the second group of faith groups from practicing what they believe. The founders tried to prevent this, for the stability of the country. It doesn't matter that everyone "thinks" they are right and others are wrong -- it matters that we are plural as a society and the government should recognize everyone's ceremonies the same -- which means that gay marriages committed by churches and faith groups that believe in gay marriages, should be honored by the government regardless of what groups that don't like it say.

Everyone's beliefs can be honored, thus preserving the values that my 12 times removed Great Grandfather died for -- but not if we allow one side to legislate away the rights of the other side.

And that's what I think.

Reynolds Jones

The Christians say that marriage is a divine institution joining one man and one woman only, and that to allow same sex marriages destroys the sanctity of the marital institution. How can Christians say such things? As if marriage were still intact. They say Marriage is supposed to be between one man and one woman only. If this is a true statement to you, then you are a Bible believing Christian and you must also agree that sex is supposed to happen only between two married people. We all know that there are many Christians who have sex before marriage? The divorce rates among Christians are so high it is ridiculous. How many of us have heard of Christians participating in adultery, pastors addicted to pornography? The institution of marriage was desecrated long before the homosexuals asked for the privilege of marriage. It was desecrated by Christians. It isn't non-Christians preachers that must leave their churches due to extra-marital affairs. Its the Christians.

Marriage is between a man and a woman even if society would decide to let others marry. That's because the real definition of marriage is the legal or religious union between a man and a woman. So if you decide to start calling a pig a donkey it's still a pig.

You're wasting your breath. It's not about reason. It's about bigotry. And about a religion that doesn't dare have any part of its foundation challenged by facts or the whole establishment will come crashing down.

People say a lot of things that are just plain wrong. You're preaching to the choir. I agree with you, but that's not the way it is. For now.
