Can I install a SATA drive in a computer with 2 pata hard drives and transfer the XP operating system and the rest of the contents of an existing PATA hard drive to the new SATA?

If you have a SATA controller then, yes you should be able to hook up both drives and copy everything over. PCs can support up to 4 devices like hard drives, cd drives, etc. But if you currently have PATA drives then I doubt you would have a connection for a SATA drive.

Yeah you definately can. Depending on the type of motherboard you might have to install a PCI card with SATA controllers. SATA drives are hot swappable, they are definately the way to go. When you say transfer, bare in mind you cannot transfer programs well not successfully at least. But as far as files and folders go, those would transfer. Make sure if you have outlook to transfer your emails, settings, contacts.. And if you use internet explorer, you might want to transfer your favorites. You can purchase SATA controllers at any/most retail stores.
