Last night I saw this little grey owl fly in and perch on my telephone wire. It was only about 5-6 inches high when perched. I live in Berkley Michigan and have never seen anything like this around the house. Does anyone have any information about what kind it might have been?

it is definately a grey phase screech owl, they are very cool. and no, there is NO way it can eat your 4 lb yorkie, but there are larger day-hunting birds of prey that would eat a smal dog as a snack. don't leave him/her outside unsupervised

It's likely an eastern screech owl, there's a gray colour morph and a red colour morph tough the gray ones are more common. They are a fairly common and widespread species it's just that they tend to disappear during the day. Tough you haven't seen any it's quite possible that you've heard one, either a long trill, or a whiny whistle at night or early morning before sunrise. Always a neat bird to spot.
