I need to replace a push button door lock that is not convertible from right to left or left to right, so I want to make sure I buy the correct "side".

you draw a picture and take it to the store when you order a door. They have a chart that shows the door swings. I think there are 4 different versions. left swing in, left swing out etc.

Which side of the door are the hinges on? Not sure about your question. Door knob assemblies have pushbutton locks and don't usually specify right or left. Go to Ace Hardware and talk to the Helpful Harware Man or to Home Depot and ask for information from the DIY section. You can get specific answers that way.

Stand in the door opening with your back to the hinges. Which ever way the door opens is the "hand".

standing in front of the door if hindges are on left side then it is a left handed door and vise a verse its a right hand door.
