What's the difference between a saying your"pretty cool" and just cool. Also dose pretty cool mean the same as not really cool or very cool?

pretty cool always seemed to me to mean kind of cool, but not totally cool. or they find it slighty surprising that you are cool. :D

The word pretty in this usage is more for emphasis than anything else and has little necessity. In fact depending on how you say it it could imply that in terms of coolness they're just making the grade, or that they excel in coolness. It's probably best to use the term in spoken word rather than written since it could go either way. When you're saying a person is cool, they just are, and it probably sounds a bit more like you are as well.

All in all its a matter of context. For example.

"I like Joe, he knows some pretty cool stuff." Implies that he's excelling in the area of coolness

"Joe's a bit weird, but he's pretty cool" Say that though Joe has some drawbacks he's just cool enough to be tolerable.

Oddly, "pretty cool" means very cool, while "cool" means good, but not great.
(Boy would I hate to learn english these days.)
