The whole term is "pro bono publico." It's Latin and means literally for the good of the public. As a practical matter, it means an atty is doing work for free. In my state we are required to do a minimum of 50 hours of pro bono work each year. I chose to do my pro bono work representing abused and neglected children, but any free legal work will suffice.

In the legal community, "pro bono" means to give ones legal services to a client or defendant without cost. In many states, attorneys are required to give a certain portion of their legal services to folks who cannot afford to pay an attorney. There are also compassionate attorneys who will defend a client without charge (pro-bono) because they feel someone has been used or misrepresented. Hope that helps a little! Annie

For free. Often used in legal matters. Example: An attorney may take on a very high profile case "pro bono" for free as an effort to promote himself in the legal field he specializes in. If the case is won, sure to bring business his way.

"Pro bono publico (often shortened to pro bono) is a phrase derived from Latin meaning "for the public good". It is used to designate legal or other professional work undertaken voluntarily and without payment, as a public service."

Absolutely nothing. It's a catch-phrase void of substance politicians like to use to promote their agenda regardless of what it may be. Who isn't 'pro-family' except for maybe Ted Bundy or Jeffery Dahmer? It's just like environmentalism. Who is against the environment? Only a psychotic criminal would want to destroy the environment. It's just pinned on big companies because it's the trendy thing to do. Big companies have no interest in destroying natural resources after all it's by exploiting those resources that they make their money. They'd go out of business if they destroyed the environment.
